Nature can help provide solutions to problems we face in our societies – and it has been doing for thousands of years. But what makes a natural element – a tree, or a piece of lawn, for example – a nature-based solution? Nature-based solutions can be defined by five factors:
Find out more about each of these factors by watching the video below created by the EU Nature-Based Solutions Clustering Task Force 4: NBS Communicators and uploaded by NetworkNature.
Nature-based solutions play a vital role in the IN-HABIT project. They are a key part of the visionary and integrated solutions being deployed to foster inclusive health and well-being in the project’s four pilot cities: Cordoba, Lucca, Riga, and Nitra.
In Cordoba, for example, IN-HABIT is using therapy gardens as part of its plans for creating green, sustainable, and creative areas within public spaces in Las Palmeras. In Lucca, on the other hand, animal lines (green corridors that are accessible to both humans and animals) are being built in order to reconnect the historic centre, the ancient walls, and the surrounding green areas. Meanwhile, in Riga, therapy gardens are being integrated into the Agenskalns market area. And in Nitra, experimental gardens are being developed as part of a multifunctional open-source urban landscape along the 8 km cycle road linking the Industrial Park and Dražovce with the main city. Moreover, the environmentis one of Nitra’s focuses – its IN-HABIT value is “Art and Environment”.
At IN-HABIT, we’re really excited to be working with nature to boost inclusive health and well-being in urban public spaces. To find out more about the project, and the whole host of other innovations being integrated with nature-based solutions to accomplish our goals, visit our project page.
