IN-HABIT Bogotá in EcoUrban Forum Bogotá, July 22, 23 y 24, 2024
August 29, 2024On September 24-25, the In Habit team proudly took part in the Task Force and Network Nature Annual Event in Brussels. This year’s theme, Bust the Myth, focused on debunking widespread misconceptions that influence practices, research, policymaking, and business, with the aim of driving transformative change and reversing biodiversity loss.
The event opened with a captivating performance that engaged the audience with humor and reflection, shedding light on the true meaning of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). It emphasized the need to bring the concept into a more relatable and tangible dimension for inhabitants, enhancing public awareness of its significance in everyday life.
The event featured a series of thought-provoking presentations, including a keynote address by Humberto Delgado Rosa, Director for Natural Capital at the European Commission’s DG Environment. His speech underscored the critical overlap between ecological restoration and NBS, pointing out that restoration efforts are not simply about conservation but are essential for sustaining human life. Rosa stressed the importance of integrating NBS into economic models, acknowledging that while these solutions offer immense environmental and social benefits, they often face challenges in terms of financial viability. His remarks prompted discussions on how to balance economic considerations with ecological imperatives.
The event continued with a wide array of interventions that collectively debunked several pervasive myths. Key topics included addressing flood risks through NBS measures in wetlands and ponds, innovations in sustainable agriculture supported by local communities, and the far-reaching consequences of human activities on ecosystems. Speakers explored new paradigms in land transformation, such as geomorphic restoration, and highlighted the value of a comprehensive, ecological approach to land restoration that considers the interconnectedness of natural systems.
The discussions throughout the event reinforced a central message: everyone has a role to play in restoring our planet. By embracing innovative, science-based solutions and rethinking traditional approaches, we can contribute to reversing biodiversity loss and securing a more sustainable future for all.
