May 27, 2025Las Palmeras Unveils Córdoba’s Largest Mural: A Testament to Community and Art
In a remarkable fusion of art and community spirit, the Las Palmeras neighbourhood in Córdoba now proudly hosts the city’s largest mural, spanning an impressive 400 square metres. This vibrant masterpiece, created by Colombian urban artist Wilson Niño Vargas, is a cornerstone of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 IN-HABIT project, aimed at promoting inclusive health and well-being through innovative urban regeneration.
The mural’s creation was a collaborative effort, involving the IN-HABIT team in Córdoba, the University of Córdoba (UCO), the local residents’ association Unión y Esperanza, and the Agency for Housing and Rehabilitation of Andalusia (AVRA). Together, they transformed a neighbourhood wall into a canvas that reflects the identity, resilience, and aspirations of the Las Palmeras community.
Wilson Niño Vargas, a member of the urban art collective Sur Vamos from Ciudad Bolívar in Bogotá, brings a wealth of experience in community-engaged art. His work in Bogotá’s “Museo Libre” has been instrumental in beautifying urban spaces and fostering social cohesion. In Las Palmeras, his collaboration with local community members ensured that the mural resonates deeply with the residents’ experiences and hopes.
This initiative is part of IN-HABIT’s broader mission to enhance health and well-being in underserved urban areas through cultural and artistic interventions. By engaging residents in the co-creation process, the project fosters a sense of ownership and pride, turning public spaces into symbols of collective identity and transformation.
The Las Palmeras mural stands as a testament to the power of art in community development, illustrating how collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful change and a renewed sense of belonging.
