Over two days, IN-HABIT researcher Isotta MacFadden participated in the International Congress on Education, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer organised by the University of Pablo de Olavide in Seville, where she presented the lines of work of the European H2020 research project IN-HABIT, explaining the specific challenges related to the vulnerability of a neighbourhood such as Las Palmeras.
This congress, organised by the EduEmer Chair of the Pablo de Olavide University and AFOE Training, was attended by more than 518 people from eight different countries, representing 82 universities and educational institutions. The aim was to offer open spaces for reflection, knowledge transfer, and academic debate, allowing the sharing and exchange of innovations, opinions, and educational research, as well as to generate a socio-scientific ecosystem of encounters.
In this way, MacFadden spoke about “educational vulnerability, understood as a set of diverse and problematic situations that weaken the bond of schooling”. During her talk, she explained that when vulnerable groups appear in education, the chances of school failure increase.
“It is clear how education is a cross-cutting element in the lack of cohesion and vulnerability of citizens. In this sense, the experience of socio-educational workshops in the community of this marginal neighbourhood was presented as a tool to strengthen the development of this territory,” said MacFadden.
As such, this type of socio-educational tool has been proposed with the aim of improving the level of self-esteem of the community, reinforcing the community’s positive identity, strengthening comprehensive community work and promoting socio-emotional education. All of this, involving educational agents and using undervalued resources such as renaturalisation and culture, will be carried out with the aim of promoting the learning and schooling process.
