City of Cordoba

Cordoba with 325,701 inhabitants in 2019 (INE), is located in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Southern Spain. It is the third largest and most populous city in Andalusia after Seville and Malaga, and the 12th in Spain. The city has a long history and cultural background dating back from Roman times. It was the city capital of Al-Andalus Muslim Empire (8th-13th centuries) being the 2nd largest, most cultured and opulent city in Europe at the end of the first millennium. These centuries of wealth and splendour have left an overwhelming cultural heritage that made Cordoba to be the first city holding 4 inscriptions in the World Heritage List.

This rich heritage and strong commitment of the city to provide a high standard cultural offer are at the origins of tourism, the key economic driver with more than one million overnight stays in 2018. However, the economic indicators for this same year (9,992 € net income per inhabitant and 33.16% unemployment rate) locate the city in a low position at country level. The city is also challenged by the needy situation of some of its neighbourhoods, hosting three of the most marginal ones in Spain.

The City Hall and its recently elected Mayor are firmly committed to addressing these problems through several policy initiatives and strategies. In this scenario, the City Hall welcomes the development of the IN-HABIT project in Las Palmeras, one of the most marginal neighbourhoods in Cordoba, and will support the project activities through complementary initiatives and synergies. IN-HABIT Visionary and Integrated Solutions (VIS) in Las Palmeras will focus on the role of culture to boost health and wellbeing, since the area is located between the city and Medina Azahara, an archaeological site recently awarded as a World Heritage Site.

The Cordoba City Hall will co-coordinate WP1 on Sustainable mobility and creative square in Cordoba in collaboration with the University of Cordoba (UCO) and the Neighbourhood Associations for the Union and Hope of las Palmeras (AVUE), and will be involved in project activities across the other WPs as well.
